If you live in a home with steam heat, you may be wondering: do I have a one-pipe or two-pipe steam system? Knowing the difference is essential when troubleshooting issues, upgrading your radiators, or ordering replacement parts from Modern Warmth.
If you’re upgrading your steam radiators or shopping for replacement parts, the first step is knowing whether you have a one-pipe or two-pipe steam heating system. This is one of the most common questions we get from homeowners — and identifying your system is simple once you know what to look for.
In this quick guide, we’ll show you how to tell if your radiator is one-pipe or two-pipe, what the differences are, and which steam radiator valves and vents you should use for each type. Once you’ve confirmed your setup, you can choose the correct upgrades from our 1-Pipe & 2-Pipe Steam Radiator Accessories
One-Pipe Steam System: Each radiator has just one pipe connected to it. That single pipe carries steam in and lets the condensed water drain back out.
Two-Pipe Steam System: Each radiator has two pipes — one for steam supply, one for condensate return.
Check the side of the radiator for a small, bullet-shaped vent.
One-Pipe Radiator: Always has an air vent to release trapped air as steam enters the radiator.
Two-Pipe Radiator: Doesn’t have an air vent since air escapes through the return line instead.
Need a replacement vent? You’ll find high-quality options in our steam fitting collection
One-Pipe Systems: The valve is meant to be fully open or fully closed — not adjusted halfway.
Two-Pipe Systems: Some allow adjustable or thermostatic control.
You likely have a one-pipe steam radiator if:
There’s only one pipe connected.
You see a small air vent on the side.
The valve is either fully open or fully closed.
Your home is an older single-family house.
You likely have a two-pipe steam radiator if:
There are two pipes — one in, one out.
There’s no air vent on the radiator itself.
You may have adjustable or thermostatic valves.
You live in a larger or multi-unit building.
If you’re still uncertain, just snap a photo of your radiator and email it to info@modernwarmth.com — we’ll tell you exactly which setup you have and point you to the correct parts from our One-Pipe / Two-Pipe Steam Selection
